The current Tyne Bridge in 2009
The buildings on Bottle Bank Gateshead were demolished to make access routes to the New Tyne Bridge.
Newcastle is famous for its export of coal to many great cities from the 13th century particular London. However, we can trace industrial Newcastle right back to the Romans around AD119 when the first known bridge was built named after Hadrian 'Bridge of Aelius' his family name.
In 1836 the bank of England accepted plans from Richard Grainger for the erection of new premises.

Newcastle still retains many of its medieval churches which were constructed in the main of local sandstone including St Nicholas Cathedral
